Although Jeroen and myself have passed the check out phase, the other pilots have not reached that point yet. The weather is not helping either; we have fog, drizzle and rain. Not great flying conditions… As a result we are faced with a small delay.

Although that Jeroen and myself have completed the check out, the other pilots have not yet completed their paperwork and tests. Today started with a visit of the local FAA office. After some paperwork, we received our US certificate based on our Dutch private pilot licenses. Yet another part of the process to fly in the US.

We started our day today with “ground school”. During a 3 hour session Paul Wickstrom (one of the Pinnacle Aviation Academy instructors) gave us a refresh of the rules and best practices that apply when flying in the USA.

In the afternoon it was flying time for Jeroen. Yesterday during my check flight, we had fabulous weather. Today the weather is extremely poor. We have fog, drizzle and as a result we can’t just go for a check flight. After some discussion with Paul, we came to the conclusion that we had to pass some bad weather in the area of the airfield and if we could fly a bit to the north, we would have good weather again.

Today it’s checkout time. Before we can hire and fly a plane in the US, we will need to convince the flying school that we can safely fly the plane. The way to do so is go flying with an instructor. And that’s exactly what we did today. We being Jeroen and myself and having Niels coming along as a passenger. Jeroen and I will fly the N2454G over the next few weeks and therefore have to go through the same process. Today it’s my checkout, Jeroen will fly tomorrow.

Holiday of 2010 has begun!

Friday 1 October 2010

As I posted before, this year’s holiday will be all about flying in the USA.

Today we (Henk and Marianne Schrier, Lex Versteeg, Max Runneboom, Niels Kootkar, Jeroen van Rossum, Ferdinand de Wit and myself) left Amsterdam and after way too many hours we arrived in LA. Flying for over 10 hours and arriving just an hour later at your destination. Great isn’t it?!?! Here we got on board of a minivan to drive to Carlsbad California; home of Pinnacle Aviation Academy. After arriving at the Hampton Inn, which is conveniently situated just across the road of the airport, we were all so tired of the trip over, that we went for a nice meal and then crashed…

I will try to publish some pictures of the group later today and give an impression of where we are. For now: I have to go flying.
