Doing the tourist thing in Longreach

Although Longreach is not the biggest town in this country, it has some interesting things to offer. Today we will explore most of them. We started the day with a visit to a station (or farm). We got picked up at the hotel by Trevor in a more or less oversized “bus” aka “truck”. From there on we drove to the station where we picked up Marie. Marie and Devan Pearce run Strathmore station and she was going to tell us all about this place.

Alice Springs

After all the small towns in the Outback, we have now arrived in the “big city” Alice Springs. Well with a population of about 26000 it’s far bigger than the other towns (Birdsville had about 60 - 80 and a place like Charleville about 3500 people). So we have a “shopping mall”, several restaurants and bars etc. We will stay one day here and Clare has organized a nice tour again.

Uluru or Ayers Rock

Today we will walk along Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock) and find out what it’s all about. Therefore we booked a guided tour with somebody that knows a lot of the rock, its history and the people that used to live around it: the Aboriginal people. Since our tour guide does not speak English, we also have a translator.

Coober Pedy

We are in Coober Pedy and today we will learn a bit more about opals and the area around this town. And the best way to do all this is by having a guide. So, we ended up with Gunther. As the name suggest he is from Germany and came to Coober Pedy a long time ago to search for opals. So he is an expert now and stopped digging holes in the ground to find these stones. Nowadays Gunther organises bustours to show people like us around.
